From Question and Answer Forums: What are others saying about this plant?
I plan to put three Yellowwoods in a line about 18 feet apart in full sun all day. My house was built in 1993 and the soil where I will plant the trees is heavy clay and compacted. I plan to plant the trees by digging a hole three times the diameter of the root ball, a little less deep than the root ball and filling in with shredded topsoil. I have read that Yellowwoods have a taproot. Does this location and planting method seem like it will be successful with Yellowwoods
Likely no. Yellowwoods dont do particularly well in heavy soils, espetially in full sun. I might suggest a Zelkova variety or Honeylocust, as they will be more tolerant of harsh conditions. A note about taproots I dont know for sure if yellowwoods have a trong taproot or not, but any tree transplanted balled and burlapped wil have had all roots severed and wont form another strong taproot. Containerized tress should have all circling roots removed before planting, and this usualy removes the taproot as well.
Try Ammon Nursery in Burlington Ky. Ask for Amy 859-586-6246. You might also ask for one called Perkins Pink. They have had some containers in the past. Tell them plantplaces sent you. Let us know if you have any luck.
Cant seem to find one around the Cincy area. Was wondering if you had suggestions. Thanks
