It is worth noting that Douglas fir deteriorates markedly with age, with a few noteable exceptions, so a beautiful, full, large tree is not, in my observation, typical.

Comments:
My plant is at least 10 years old and in good health. My house location is in SE Kettering. Often this plant keeps its burgundy color until August. It often turns orange, red, and predominantly yellow in the fall. The bloom does seem to be a little more red than the native redbud I have planted 30 away from it. They are often in bloom at the same time. This plant seems to be brittle and branches can be broken easily. However, it has not suffered from storms, just careless mowing.

I have a Sweetheart American Chestnut in my yard that is 5 years old. It sometimes turns golden in the fall and it bears fruit every other year. I have a Dunstan in the back yard which is the same age and it too bears fruit. The Sweetheart is presumed to be a naturally occurring hybrid that was found in SE Ohio by a professor of Botany at Ashland College, OH. It may be a blight resistant native species actually.

I think the spelling is correct. It is an outstanding midsized shrub that we use quite often in the shade. Has nice spring flowers, attractive foliage and great fall color. We have purchased them from Klynn Nursery. I just finished reading the article in American Nurseryman, so I wanted to see what the site was all about. I think this is going to be a fantastic tool and I plan to use it very often. I would love to help in any way. Talk to you soon.

Hi I have a gorgeous Cham. Noot. Pendula specimen that I planted in spring 02 as a 6 ft tall tree. It is now approx. 18 ft tall and doing well on the southeast exposure of our yard. Its pretty impressive and has that mysterious appearance. If youd like to view it and want me to send a photo, that can be done. Also have a 12 ft Japanese Maple Aconitifolium that is quite impressive, despite the last few challenging growing seasons. Your web site should be a great reqource for all of us avid local gardeners Thanks

Responses to this comment.:
Enkianthus campanulatus is what is normally sold in this area. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has Enkianthus perulatus which we think is superior however they are not grown in the nursery industry. This is why we added this to the Louisville site. The hope is to see this particular species propagated and sold in the region to test it out. Thanks for your comments.

Recently, street improvements took two shade trees from our front yard on a busy, urban street. We want to replant trees that will provide shade, be fast growing, and very tolerant of traffic. The area between our house and the sidewalk is just 15 - 20 feet wide. The earliest, reasonable opportunity for us to plant will be fall, 2008. The area receives full sun in the afternoon.I heard that the new American elm might be a good choice. We are open to suggestions. Thanks very much.

I plan to put three Yellowwoods in a line about 18 feet apart in full sun all day. My house was built in 1993 and the soil where I will plant the trees is heavy clay and compacted. I plan to plant the trees by digging a hole three times the diameter of the root ball, a little less deep than the root ball and filling in with shredded topsoil. I have read that Yellowwoods have a taproot. Does this location and planting method seem like it will be successful with Yellowwoods

Acer griseum is an excellent small tree in the NorthEast. It is not bothered by pests or disease. Leaves stay intact until they drop in late fall. It also is fairly drought tolerant. I have used it in civic plantings as well as private gardens. The cinnamon-colored exfoliating bark looks spectacular in a snowy landscape.

Subject: advice Acer griseum x nikoense Girard's Hybrid Maple 2008-11-06 16:24:55
Comments:
I live in Springfield, Missouri Zone 6 It is in the Southwest part of the state, about an hour north of Arkansas and an hour east of Kansas. I have an Acer griseum x nikoense in my front yard north side, although it gets very little summer shade. It does get autumn morning and evening shade. It is a relatively young tree about 15 feet tall with a trunk caliper of about 1 1/2 inches. I am not getting the red fall colors that I am supposed to. I usually get a brown like that of many oak species. I have had it two seasons now. This year I did get some color. But, not much. It started out somewhat yellow with a brown verigation. Yellow on the inside. Brown on the margins. As I inspected the leaflets closer, I could see tints of red in most of the leafs. I wanted to know what my problem is. I believe it comes from the soil being too alkaline. But, I saw several of the standard A.griseum at Utah State University a few years ago. Their soils up there reach into the pHs of the 8s. And, the fall color was a brilliant red. Do you have any ideas Thank you.

i rarely see these trees around cincy, if you want to see a real nice specimin, go to the winton woods frisbee golf course hole 12 -twenty feet right of the basket. check it out. the one in the picture can easily be confused with chinkapin oak judging by the bark. i didnt see any chinkapin oaks on the site, ill picture a nice one and submit it soon.
