Plant type: native American perennial
Height x width: 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide
Growth habit: Upright
Foliage: Opposite, lanceolate, serrate, 3 to 5 inches long. Stems are square and unbranched
Flowers: 4 widely-spaced vertical rows of tubular flowers on erect terminal spikes. Flowers have 2 lips and are usually pale pink, rose purple or white
Culture: Sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. Prefers slightly acidic soil. May require staking, especially if fertilized or grown in fertile soils. Spreads fairly rapidly and may require frequent division to keep it in bounds
Uses: Backgrounds, cut flowers, naturalized area, hummingbird plant
Propagation: Division, cuttings, seed
Cultivars: ‘Miss Manners’ is clump forming and doesn't spread throughout the garden. Stiff, square stems end in dense spikes of pure white, snapdragon-like flowers bloom throughout the summer.
