Notes:
Height x width: 12 to 18 inches tall and wide
Growth habit: Mound forming, and arching
Foliage: Clustered, grass-like leaves arise from the base of the plant. Leaves are flat, thick and to ½ inch wide. Semi-evergreen. May have variegated stripes of white, solver or cream, depending on cultivar
Flowers: Not showy
Culture: Sun or shade. Prefers moist, well-drained soil
Uses: Massing, groundcover, front of border, or rock garden
Propagation: Division, in spring
Cultivars: ‘Silver Sceptre’, above, has silvery white variegations along the edges
‘Evergold’, middle, with coleus and petunias, has gold stripes
Related Species:
Carex buchananii – Leatherleaf sedge has a cinnamon-brown leaf color. Narrow leaves grow upright for about 18 inches, then taper to the end. Evergreen, for sun or light shade. The brown-leaved sedges are sometimes referred to as “dead sedges”.
