Notes:
Height x width: 0.5 to 1.5 feet
Growth habit: Compact mound
Foliage: Alternate, ovate to elliptic, crenate to dentate leaf margin, glossy, 1.5 to 4 inches long. The upper leaves may be opposite.
Flowers: Flat and roughly star-shaped with a 2-inch long lower sepal and slightly curved spur, usually facing upward at the top of the foliage. Single or double. Blooms all growing season until frost, without deadheading
Culture: Moderate light intensity (afternoon shade) and moist but well-drained soil. Protect from strong winds
Pests and problems: Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus, vectored by insects
Uses: Bedding plant, containers. Often seen massed in the landscape
Propagation: Seed, cuttings
Cultivars and Related species: Numerous cultivars and series are available. Above is Infinity series Bright Red. Below right is Rockapulco series Pink, a double form.
Impatiens x hawkeri, New Guinea Impatiens, often have variegated leaves and extra large flowers. They may be taller and a bit more sun tolerant that the species, but still need plenty of moisture if planted in sun.
