Notes:
Growth habit: Erect
Foliage: Whorled, in groups of four (occasionally three). 1 to 3 inches long, ovate-lanceolate, with entire margins. Stems and leaves are pubescent. Purple and variegated colored forms are available.
Flowers: Bright yellow, ¾ inches wide, clustered in leaf axils, in June to July.
Culture: Sun to part shade and moist soil. Spreads rapidly in moist soil; less so in dry – but the green and variegated forms will scorch if not moist enough.
Pests and problems: Whitefly, leaf scorch
Uses: Wild or natural gardens, in border it might over-run its boundaries.
Propagation: Division
Cultivars:
‘Alexander’ is an upright variety, 3 feet, variegated in cream and green with occasional pink highlights in the fall and early spring.
‘Golden Alexander’ – 2 foot tall plant with golden yellow margins on the leaves.
‘Firecracker’ is 2 feet tall with deep chocolate colored foliage. Spreads, but is not invasive.
