Half of our maple, we believe, was smothered by wild honeysuckle bushes growing next to it. Half is dead, and we have trimmed most of the dead branches from the tree. There are some branches we cannot reach. The other half is trying desperatley to survive. In past years, this used to be the most beautiful tree in the fall displaying brilliant red, glowing leaves. The past year or two, the leaves just fall. It comes alive every spring, but clearly is struggling. We want to save the tree, and would welcome some direction. Thank you.
The best I can advise you is to remove any of the competition that is around the root zone. If honeysuckle is anywhere around the root zone it should be removed. Red maples have struggled the last 3 or 4 years with the droughts we have had. This summer was not bad. I would look at the top half of the tree. If the top is in good shape I would say you are ok. If the top is dying out or losing many leaves early that would be a bad sign. Let me know what you think. If you want you can send a photo of the tree.Thanks,Steve
