Foliage: Alternate, closely-set, soft, pointed leaves, 3 to 6 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide, with parallel veins. Base of leaves clasp the stems
Flowers: White or pale lilac, star-shaped flowers with crimson spots are borne in clusters in leaf axils and at stem tips. The stamens and styles form a center crown on top of the petals. Blooms from late summer to early fall
Culture: Partial shade and moist, fertile soil

Propagation: Division, seed
Cultivars: ‘Taipei Silk’ has purple flowers highlighted with lighter purple and white, plus reddish freckles. Blooms August till hard frost.
