Notes:
Plant type: Perennial, evergreen ground cover
Height x width: 6 to 9 inches tall and spreading
Growth habit: Forms dense mat of foliage
Foliage: Basal, oblong, with a rounded apex on a narrowed base, sessile, green and bronze (or other colors, depending on cultivar), on stolon-bearing, square stems. Grown as much for the decorative foliage as for the flowers
Flowers: Violet blue, with whorls of mint-like flower spikes, in spring or early summer (and sometimes periodically after that)
Culture: Sun or shade. Tolerates poor soil. Low maintenance
Pests and problems: Crown rot, especially in dense plantings. Make sure plants receive good air circulation and divide every 2 to 3 years
Uses: Groundcover
Propagation: Seed, cuttings, division.
Cultivars: Several cultivars available with varying shades of bronze, green and pink foliage, including:
‘Bronze Beauty’ – Waxy metallic bronze colored leaves
‘Burgundy Glow’ – Green, white and pink tri-colored foliage
‘Chocolate Chip’ – Narrow, small, chocolate colored leaves
