Notes:
Height x width: 0.5 to 1 foot tall
Growth habit: Dense, mounded habit
Foliage: Basal leaves early in the season, then leaves that are opposite, gray-green, lanceolate, 1 to 3 inches long
Flowers: Loose clusters of single or double, sweetly-scented flowers with fringed margins in shades of pink, red, lavender and white, from early summer to fall. Called pinks because the petals look like they have been cut with pinking shears
Culture: Full sun and well-drained, slightly alkaline soil
Uses: Bedding, edging
Propagation: Seed
Cultivars and Related species:
Telstar series – ‘Telstar Picotee’ was a 1989 AAS winner; short plants to 10 inches with crimson red flowers with a serrated white edge. Blooms as heavily the first year and may return in zone 6 or warmer.
‘Ideal Violet’ – Shown here, 1992 AAS winner, 10 inches tall with 1˝-inch single violet blooms and superior heat tolerance
D. barbatus is Sweet William, a binnial that self-sows, making it seem perennial.
D. caryophyllus is an annual carnation similar to greenhouse carnations but smaller and more fragrant.
