Plant type: native American perennial
Height x width: 5 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, even taller if grown in the shade
Growth habit: Upright
Foliage: Whorled, usually 3 to 5 leaves at each node. Leaves are 8 to 12 inches long, strongly serrated, with a lanceolate shape. Stems are often purple at the nodes. Crushed foliage smells like vanilla
Flowers: Small individual purple/pink/mauve flowers in a large terminal panicle that is up to 1.5 feet across
Culture: Best in full sun with abundant moisture. Can be pruned in spring to control height
Pests and problems: Not tolerant of summer heat or drought
Uses: Border, specimen
Propagation: Seed, division
Cultivars: E. maculatum ‘Gateway’ is a smallish cultivar, 5 feet tall, with mauve-pink flowers atop red stems
