Notes:
Growth habit: Upright
Foliage: Opposite, lanceolate, glossy, 2 inches long with a tapering base. Toothed, except at base and tip.
Flowers: Blue, pink or white flowers with long stamens in terminal racemes up to 1 foot long. The pedicels are shorter than the bracts and calyx, giving the inflorescences a dense appearance. Plants are in bloom 1 to 2 months, usually during June-August.
Culture: Full sun and well-drained soil. Deadhead for longer flowering. Avoid wet winter soil conditions.
Pests and problems: Provide very good drainage to discourage root rot. Powdery mildew can be a problem.
Uses: Perennial border, cut flower. Flowers are attractive to butterflies.
Propagation: Seed, division, cuttings
Cultivars:
‘Sunny Border Blue’, shown at right, was a Perennial Plant of the Year in 1993. It produces wonderful dark blue flowers that bloom from June till September on 18 inch plants.
‘Red Fox’ is also about 18 inches with rose-pink flower spikes.
‘Icicle’ has white flowers.
‘Goodness Grows’ has dark blue flower spiles and grows only 12 to 15 inches tall, but creeps out to around 18 inches spread
