Growth habit: Mounding
Foliage: Narrow, slightly lobed, gray-green and hairy leaves that are alternate or basal, 8 to 10 inches long including the petiole. Upper leaves are sessile and entire.
Flowers: Plants bloom from late spring or early summer until frost. The daisy-like flowers are either single or double and are as wide as 4 inches. The species has yellow ray flowers with yellow or purple disk flowers, but many cultivars exist that have other color combinations.
Culture: Gaillardias tolerate heat, cold, drought, strong winds and poor soils. For best performance, they should be planted in full sun in well-drained soil.
Uses: Bedding plant, cut flower
Propagation: Seed, division, root cuttings
Cultivars:
‘Fanfare’ is 18 inches tall and has tubular orange petals with yellow tips, surrounding a large burgundy eye. Flowers are almost lacy in appearance.
‘Arizona Sun’ was a 2005 All America Seed Selection.
