Growth habit: Upright to rounded
Foliage: Opposite and sessile, cordate-ovate to elliptic, rough to the touch, 1½ to 4 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide
Flowers: Showy ray flowers, single or double, usually without disk flowers. Flowers are up to 6 inches in diameter. Colors of white, red, pink, yellow, violet, orange or crimson. Blooms all summer and until frost.
Culture: Full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Need frequent deadheading.
Pests and problems: Powdery mildew is common. Sun, good air circulation and dry weather help prevent mildew. Fungicides may also be applied to control the disease.
Uses: Borders, edging, cut flowers.
Propagation: Seed.
Related species: Z. angustifolia, creeping zinnia, is a Mexico native that grows ½ to 1 foot tall. Its spreading habit makes it a good choice as a colorful annual groundcover. Leaves are linear or linear-lanceolate, ¾ inches long. Flowers are typically orange, yellow, brnze or white.
