Growth habit: Upright and rounded
Foliage: Square stems, opposite leaves that are lanceolate to oblong, rough above and slightly pubescent underneath. Basal leaves have short petioles but stem leaves are sessile or clasping. Leaves are 3 to 6 inches long.
Flowers: Numerous dense, whorled violet-blue spikes, 4 to 12 inches long, rise from basal leaves in May and June.
Culture: Full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Grows well in hot, dry conditions
Uses: Beds, borders, cut flower
Propagation: Stem cuttings, division
Cultivars: ‘Rose Queen’ features showy rose-pink flowers (below). ‘May Night’, one of the earliest blooming perennial salvias, grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 feet with dark violet purple spikes that bloom spring to fall. It was a Perennial Plant Association winner in 1997. ‘East Friesland’ grows 18 to 20 inches tall, with blooms that are violet blue. ‘Snow Hill’ has white flowers.
