Plant type: North America native perennial
Height x width: 3 to 5 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide
Growth habit: Upright, finely-branched
Foliage: Alternate, pinnately-divided, up to 5 inches long with stiff trichomes
Flowers: Long-blooming (June to August), composite flowers with yellow ray flowers surrounding a dull-gray central disk in the shape of an elongated cylinder (1 inch long) as long as or longer than the ray flowers. Flowers are borne on long pedicels
Culture: Full sun, well-drained soil, but will tolerate clay or sandy soils. Tolerates poor, dry soils.
Uses: Perennial border, meadow or native plant garden. Best massed because individual plants are narrow and somewhat sparsely leafed
Propagation: Seed, division
Cultivars: straight species. Also, ‘Red Midget’is a well-branched, 15 inch dwarf with yellow edged red petals
