Growth habit: Upright
Foliage: Flat-bladed, upright, gray-green, glabrous, ½ to ¾ inch wide. Provides beige to brown color in the landscape during the winter
Flowers: Large, airy panicles up to 2 feet long, with purple flowers that turn beige
Culture: Better growth habit in full sun and moist soil. Flops in rich soil. Cut back to ground in late winter
Uses: Border, screen, cut flower arrangements
Propagation: Division, seed
Cultivars: ‘Heavy Metal’, right, features metallic-blue foliage, pink-tinged flowers and a more upright, columnar form.
‘Shenandoah’ by mid-summer the grass blades are colored green and tipped with red. In the fall the color intensifies as the entire plant turns a striking blend of reds and oranges.
