Notes:
Height x width: 2 to 4 feet tall and wide
Growth habit: Upright arching
Foliage: Long and narrow, ¼ inch wide and 2 to 3 feet long, with long sheaths. Bright green in summer and golden brown in fall
Flowers: 6 to 8 inches long, feathery, nodding, light reddish-brown mature awns. Resemble little bottle brushes.
Culture: Full sun or very light partial shade and moist, well-drained soil
Uses: Border, specimen, fresh flower arrangements
Propagation: Seeds, or division in spring. Can be invasive due to its reseeding nature, especially in moist soils
Cultivars and Related species:
‘Hameln’ is smaller than the species at 2 feet; shown above.
‘Moudry’ has dark brown seed heads, and flowers later. 2 to 3 feet tall
P. orientale has pink, cottony-looking inflorescence which is very attractive but only hardy to zone 7.
