Phlox paniculata
Family: POLEMONIACEAE
Genus: Phlox
species: paniculata
Origin:
Size: 0 (min) to 0 (max)
Size Description:
Notes:
Growth habit: Upright clumps
Foliage: Opposite, thin, oblong-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, with slender points at the end, short petioles, partially clasping, 3 to 5 inches long.
Flowers: Clusters up to a foot long of disk-shaped, tubular, 5-petalled flowers arranged in panicles. Usually pink or lilac shades but other colors including white are available. Some are nicely fragrant.
Culture: Full sun and fertile, moist soil are preferred. Will grow in partial shade. Protect from the wind and mulch during the winter. Requires plenty of moisture—it is one of the first plants in the garden to wilt when the soil is dry. Deadhead to prolong blooming and prevent re-seeding.
Pests and problems: Very susceptible to powdery mildew. To help control powdery mildew, do not get foliage wet when watering and thin clumps to promote good air circulation around the foliage. Also prone to spider mite infestations.
Uses: Border
Propagation: Most selections at garden centers are cultivars and should be propagated by division or root cuttings.
Cultivars: Many cultivars are offered
