Growth habit: Vertical
Foliage: Alternate, lanceolate, 5 inches long and 1 inch wide. Upper leaves are smaller.
Flowers: Flowers are lilac-purple, pink or white and are produced in crowded, fluffy spiked inflorescences in summer. The flower spikes open from the top downward, which is the opposite of most flower spikes. Flowers are lavender, rose or white.
Culture: Most soils and conditions including damp places such as stream banks and ditches. They do best in low humidity. They thrive with minimum care and attention, and in fact, tend to lodge if regularly watered and fertilized.
Uses: Liatris makes a desirable cut flower, attracts bees and butterflies, and is an excellent border plant
Propagation: Seeds, division
Cultivars: ‘Kobold’ is compact at 18-30 inches and has dark purple flowers. One of the best for the border. ‘Floristan White’ has white flowers.
