Growth habit: Compact, rounded
Foliage: Fragrant gray foliage with narrow leaves, opposite or whorled arrangement on the square stems. Leaves up to 2 inches long.
Flowers: Purple or lavender in whorls that form interrupted spikes. Retain fragrance a long time when dried, and are often used to make sachets and potpourris.
Culture: The plants tolerate clipping and grow best in a sunny location in a dry, somewhat infertile soil. Protect the crowns during winter—plants are susceptible to winter injury when grown in wet, heavy soil. Prune plants back in spring to promote growth and remove winter-killed branch tips
Uses: Perennial border, edging, cut flowers, dried flowers, sachets and potpourris.
Propagation: Cuttings, seeds, division
Cultivars: ‘Hidcote’ has deep violet blue flowers on 18-24 inch plants - above. ‘Jean Davis’ has pinkish=white flowers. ‘Munstead’ is dwarf, with paler blooms
