Height x width: 2 to 4 feet tall
Growth habit: Upright arching
Foliage: Long and narrow, ¼ inch wide and 2 to 3 feet long, with long sheaths
Flowers: Up to 1 foot long, feathery, nodding, pink or purple awns
Culture: Full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil
Uses: Border, specimen, fresh flower arrangements.
Propagation: Seeds. Can be invasive due to its reseeding nature. Clumps can be dug in the fall, overwintered in a greenhouse or garage and divided in the spring for replanting.
Cultivar and Related species:
‘Rubrum,’ purple-leaved fountain grass, is a popular ornamental grass in herbaceous borders.
P. alopecuriodes, perennial fountain grass, tends to be slightly shorter than annual fountain grass but sends up the same feathery bottle-brush type flowers. Leaves turn yellow-brown and persist in the winter.
