Notes:
Growth habit: Upright to round growth habit
Foliage: Alternate, lanceolate, mid-green and hairy, 2 to 5 inches long. Upper leaves are sessile.
Flowers: Bright yellow ray flowers with center cones of purplish brown. About 1 to 2 inches across. Blooms in the summer and fall (July to October).
Culture: Prefers full sun or light shade in ordinary soil. Tolerates dry soil.
Pests and problems: Prone to downy mildew, powdery mildew, rust, aphids and sawfly larvae (caterpillars).
Uses: Borders, bedding plant, cut flowers. When massed, they create a large color impact that can be seen even when traveling on a freeway.
Propagation: Seeds, division for perennial types.
Cultivars:
‘Prairie Sun’ is sturdy, 3 foot tall plant with golden yellow flowers up to 3 inches across and a greenish yellow eye. A 2003 All America Selection.
‘Indian Summer’ is a sturdy selection with large, yellow flowers and brown eye
