Category: Perennial
Family: IRIDACEAE
Genus: Crocosmia
species: crocosmiiflora
Origin:
Size: 0 (min) to 0 (max)
Size Description:
Notes:
Foliage: Sword-shaped leaves in basal clumps, erect and deep green. The 1- to 2-inch wide foliage resembles that of gladiolus. The bloom stalk forms inside the foliage about half way up the leaf.
Flowers: A branched, arching spray of funnel shaped, one-sided flowers which may be brilliant red, deep orange or bright yellow, July and August.
Culture: Full sun and well-drained soil. Wind tolerant. Plants from full sized corms are usually hardy in zone 6; zone 5 with mulch. In the fall after the frost has killed the foliage, dig up smaller corms and store them during the winter. Corms should be planted about 4 inches deep.
Pests and problems: Flowering declines if Crocosmia are not divided every 2 to 3 years. Control of spider mites often needed.
Uses: Perennial border, cut flowers. Butterflies and hummingbirds love this plant.
Propagation: Division or removing offsets from the mother corms.
Cultivars:
C. 'Lucifer' is one of the hardiest cultivars, with brilliant flame red flowers in rows on wiry, gracefully arched stems that are perfect for cutting.
‘George Davison’ has clear, crisp apricot and peach colors
‘Kathleen’ Scarlet buds open to scarlet to orange flowers with subtle, soft orange throats.
