Belamcanda chinensis
Family: IRIDACEAE
Genus: Belamcanda
species: chinensis
Origin:
Size: 0 (min) to 0 (max)
Size Description:
Notes:
Growth habit: Upright
Foliage: Sword-shaped, iris-like, medium green leaves up to 1 foot long, are in flattened fans.
Flowers: Lily-like, deep orange flowers up to 2 inches across are heavily spotted with red dots, have 6 petal-like perianth segments. Flowers appear in July and August in sprays above the foliage on wiry, naked stems typically rising to 3 feet tall. Flowers give way to pear-shaped seed pods which split open when revealing a blackberry-like seed cluster, hence the common name of blackberry lily.
Culture: Prefers average, well-drained soil in full sun. Tolerates drought and poor soil. Poorly-drained soils, particularly in winter, can be fatal. Clumps slowly expand by creeping rhizomes. May self-seed in optimum growing conditions - which helps keep these somewhat short-lived perennials in the garden.
Pests and problems: Iris borer can attack the fleshy rhizome
Uses: Borders
Propagation: Careful division; self-sown seedligs
Cultivars: ‘Freckle Face’ is pale orange and shorter than the species. ‘Hello Yellow’ is 1 foot tall with unspotted yellow flowers.
