Growth habit: Upright but stems tend to sprawl
Foliage: Lance-shaped, alternate, sessile, 2 to 4 inches long
Flowers: White but become rose-colored as they age, ½ to 1 inches in diameter. The reddish flower spikes elongates during the bloom period, with only a few flowers in bloom at the same time. Blooms May through September. Deadhead (remove spent flower spikes) for longer bloom period - a pruning in mid-summer will keep the Guara from getting leggy and floppy while bringing more flowers.
Culture: Full sun and very well-drained soil. Plants die in winter if planted in wet or clay soil. Drought and humidity tolerant.
Uses: Border, wildflower garden.
Propagation: Seed, division.
Cultivars:
‘Siskyou Pink’ typically grows 2.5-3 feet tall on rigid, wiry stems. Flowers emerge rose pink from deep maroon buds.
‘Whirling Butterflies’ differs from the species by being more compact and more floriferous with flowers being a brighter white. Narrow lance-shaped leaves (1-3
