Subject: Laneys Hickory Carya x laneyi Laney's Hickory 2016-03-10 08:50:49
Comments:
I work with a group called the Fauna Foundation in Carignan on the south shore of Montreal. We have 200 acre farm which is a refuge for abused and abandoned animals. We have a large mostly hickory forest Shagbark and Bitternut on the property and I believe we may have a Laneys Hickory. Hybrids of any kind can have physical characteristics that lean towards one or the other of the parents, they are rarely a 50/50 split. In our case, the bark is very much bitternut but the fruit, though having the bitternut form, are easily 3 times the normal size and the and the difference is due to a very thick husk that is so typical of the shagbark fruit. Any comments from readers would be gratefully received.

I have also been looking for Carpinus caroliniana in cincinnati, and have not found anything. I have talked with most of the local nurseries and native propagators, but they have not gotten to them yet. The quickest and cheapest option here is to wait till fall and harvest some seeds. I plan on starting some in pots and putting some seeds directly out where I want them. See which works best. Goodluck

Half of our maple, we believe, was smothered by wild honeysuckle bushes growing next to it. Half is dead, and we have trimmed most of the dead branches from the tree. There are some branches we cannot reach. The other half is trying desperatley to survive. In past years, this used to be the most beautiful tree in the fall displaying brilliant red, glowing leaves. The past year or two, the leaves just fall. It comes alive every spring, but clearly is struggling. We want to save the tree, and would welcome some direction. Thank you.

Responses to this comment.:
The best I can advise you is to remove any of the competition that is around the root zone. If honeysuckle is anywhere around the root zone it should be removed. Red maples have struggled the last 3 or 4 years with the droughts we have had. This summer was not bad. I would look at the top half of the tree. If the top is in good shape I would say you are ok. If the top is dying out or losing many leaves early that would be a bad sign. Let me know what you think. If you want you can send a photo of the tree. Thanks,Steve

Steve,I was in your class earlier this year and remembered how you wanted to to a tree planting program. Well the city of Cincinnati agrees with youThe Cincinnati Park Board is giving away a free tree to residents.Under the program, residents can get one free tree if they pick it up, plant it and follow other guidelinesTrees must be planted within 30 feet of the right-of-way or visible from the street the resident lives on.Trees should not be planted where they will harm wires, utilities or other structures when they are grown.Forestry staff will inspect each planting location before approving a request for a free tree and will look at the location after the resident has planted the tree.A high priority is given to planting trees on private property along streets the Park Board cannot plant due to narrow right-of-ways, according to the citys website. Tree sizes range from small to large and include the following speciesForest Pansy RedbudAllegheny ServiceberryKwanzaan CherryGalaxy MagnoliaFall Fiesta Sugar MapleGreen Vase ZelkovaTulip PoplarThe Park District also will offer native tree seedlings that produce fruits and nuts that could attract wildlife. Respond to this comment
Responses to this comment.:
Barb,I dont think there are any gmo pawpaw seed out there. Most paw paw seed is collected locally from groves of Paw Paw. You have to find Paw Paw that are fruiting size in your area and collect the seed yourself. They ripen quickly and the critters will get to them as soon as they ripen so do not hesitate. If you cant find any in your community I would suggest contacting your local nursery. If you do find Paw Paw in Denver please download the plantplaces App off the website. It is a free download and you can track trees in your community. That is really why this website and App was built. Thank you for using itSteve
Barb, one other option there is an Ohio Paw Paw fest http//www.ohiopawpawfest.com/, which PlantPlaces.com sponsors every year. I know that is a bit of a hike from Denver, but I will be going this year. If you are interested, I can save seed from the Paw Paw Fest and ship it to you. The only trick is, the seed must remain moist. We can figure something out there. Once dry, it will not likely grow. If youre interested, just send us another note on this comment form, and Ill send you my direct contact information. Thanks,Brandan Jones

I have some lilies that are currently blooming and I dont know what type they are. I think they are oriental or Asiatic lilies. They grow 5 or 6 feet tall and have a lovely fragrance and a multitude of blooms. I have one that is a mutation, I think. It has a very thick stem and a group of 134 buds. They have just started blooming and it is a very lovely bouquet. I dont think all of the buds will bloom but there are many blooming right now. They have multiplied since I planted them about 5 years ago. I wonder if anyone might know what type of lily they are and now how do I take care of them.

Responses to this comment.:
I would put it in a slightly protected location. Also I would make sure not to have it in the house for more than just a couple days. Move it in and out of the house gradually so to not shock the plant with extreme heat or extreme cold. You may want to pre dig your hole as well or have some dry topsoil ready for planting. Mulch well immediatly after planting.Steve

Thanks for your comment. You can view a list of plants by choosing Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden as a region in the Search Plants screen. Or, just go to this URLhttp//www.plantplaces.com/perl/viewplants.plRegion_SearchCZBGYou can also zoom in on the internal map of plants to look at a specific location. There is a zoom control on the left side of the map. Currently, there is no way to limit the plants that you see on the map by name or type. That is a good idea, though, and I am glad you suggested it. We will consider adding that to the website. Thanks,Brandan JonesPlantPlaces.com IT

I live in NYC and would like to use the Cryptomeria Yoshino to grow 30-40 feet as a living privacy screen, but in a 6 x 20 wide space. It is important to note that there is a concrete wall and a resin shed and I would be planting these trees in between. I have been reading that they require 10-15 width, but dont know if they would just get used to growing in the area that they are in at 6. If not, please advise what type of similar Evergreen would provide a 30-40 feet height, but in a 6 x 20 area. Thank you for your reading time

Comments:
Ive seen this plant struggle in upland top of the hill sites, hillsides sloped towards south east to west, and poor soil sites throughout Eden park. From field observations Im thinking it may prefer flat ground or hillsides sloped towards the northwest, north, north east, or east. Ive seen red maples in Eden park of different cultivars try to establish themselves elsewhere, but have died during recent droughts even after being in the ground for over 15 years.Straight species of red maples are adapted to many sites, but prefer bottomland soils, alluvial soils, and even poorly drained soils that are wet in the winter and moist in the summer. My advice is to treat the cultivars as if they were the straight species they were cultivated from. Or at least plant them in an irrigated lawn setting with descent soil depth.IF anyone has seen healthy mature or at least over 25 year old red maples on southeast to west sloped hillsides, please send pictures to sagamboacincinnatistate.edu with the location.

i think i might have seen 1 or 2 of these i think one was growing by the road here in Indiana and then the other one was growing along the bike trail but these ones i saw looks pretty young maybe 2 or 3 years old i noticed them because i never seen them before around here til now but they wont last long here not with all the deer. the deer ruined my smooth sumac because each time it would grow new little leaves they would eat them right off and even the stems so i wont be growing anymore smooth sumac im going to try and grow some staghorn sumac now from seed now all i have to do now is wait for a few years for the seeds to crack open.and sens this plant of yours has the more fern looking leaves does that make it more related to the poison sumac or ivy than the staghorn sumac and other ok to eat sumacs i wonder, and the seed cone looks more compact then on the smooth sumac on smooth sumac the seed cone branches stick out a bit more on the seed head and alot less compact and i was wondering do these plants/shrubs ever cross or mix some how.

We compost and live a very green life as far as donating, shredding, repurposing, recycling, composting, etc. Wish to get rain barrels when we can afford them. We rent, so solar panels would be difficult. Usually have Veggie Garden, but spent too much time in the Hosp these last few years. Hope things will be better for fall, so we can plant. Any advice/pictures, etc would be greatly appreciated. I have a DROID 3 with Google from Verizon in case you need that info. Also have all Adobe, Quick Office, etc, so can dowload all links. Thank you in advance for any assistance you might give me in this matter. Also any websites pertaining to the above would also be helpful, esp with discounted prices as we are both disabled seniors with Council on Aging/Passport and Sos. Sec. Disability/Medicare/Medicaid. We do not have much, but do miss not having our garden and all the beautiful flowers. We actually won The Blue Ash Yard Beautification 2 xs before we lost our home. Those were wonderful memories. Havent been to the Zoo in several years and am amazedhow Green and self-sustaining you have become. Thank you for setting such a great example for the rest of The World. Would love to see all the advances, but do not quite have the money or the strength right now as just got out of the Hosp again. Would love to visit again when both the above improve. Thanks for reading. Sincerely, Judith and Carl Walz

If you would post a new question with more inftomaoirn you could get better answers. Where do you live What are the colors and style of the house What is the style of the yard Formal, modern, rustic, etc. How close will this pond be to other structures in the yard such as porch, patio, outdoor cooking area, etc. How large is the yard What is the size of the proposed pond Depth How much time will you have to maintain it I am not trying to give you a hard time There are many considerations that go into designing a pond and all the questions above need to be answered first.

Once this plant gets established I would guess about an 8 per year growth rate. Your soils and moisture throughout the year will move the growth rate up if conditions are right. The Green Giant Arborvitae isw another fast grower as well. Both are excellent plants in the Cincinnati Ohio Area. Check with your local independent nursery in your region to verify information.Steve

Muhlenbergia capillaris is a touchy grass for Cincinnati. There are a few examples of it growing in our area but not for several years in a row. I would not recommend it unless you just wanted to play around with it and see how it does. For best success I would plant it in the spring, in full sun, and with excellent drainage, planted in well draining soil. Steve

How should I submit information and photograhsBest wishes,Peter HuttingerNeighborhood Gardens CoordinatorCivic Garden CenterAbout the gardenThe Pleasant Street Community GardenModest in scale but not in purpose, the Pleasant Street Community Garden is a community-based and innovative ecological project offering a seasonal mix of annual vegetable gardening and perennial fruit crops, blended with sustainable practices. The garden is also a new urban garden model realized through collaborative partnerships with housing developers, city government and departments, the CGC and neighborhood gardeners. The Pleasant Street Community Garden is a renewal project of an older garden that had become inactive because of eroding neighborhood housing. The new garden is collaboration between neighborhood gardeners and developers of the City Homes Project. The development project includes partners from the public and private sectors including OTR Community Housing, 3CDC and developer Karen Blatt with additional support from the City of Cincinnati. The modest, vest-pocket style garden includes five raised garden beds, a cherry tree honoring the community work of Buddy Gray and gardener in the original garden and edible landscaping. To maximize food propagation in the garden, edible landscaping is an important aspect of creating a bountiful perennial harvest. The garden also incorporates a rain garden to help manage storm water from the new and renovated housing and also interfaces with MSDs Comers Ally pervious paving project.

Responses to this comment.:
Lots of people kill patnls with kindness keeping the soil moist rather than wet is a good rule of thumb unless its something like bamboo. Dont fertilize for the first 2 3 months, as most nurseries/suppliers pot their new patnls in a soil/fertilizer mix. After that, I like to fertilize most patnls each time I water with a quarter-strength soluble fertilizer. Light can be an issue for some patnls. If you see leaves turning brown or getting VERY light green, theyre probably getting too much sun if they lean toward the light, they probably need to be a bit closer. Very few patnls can take direct sunlight, particularly from a west- or south- facing window. If you must use these windows, try putting a sheer curtain on the window to cut down on the intensity of the sun. Humidity is also a factor to be considered if the tips of the leaves get brown, or if they wilt quickly, it may be too dry. To combat this without using a humidifier, try setting the pot on a tray or saucer filled with pebbles, into which water has been poured so that the pebbles are just sticking out. As the water evaporates, the air immediately around the plant will be more humid. If you are having pest problems, a good drench will sometimes take care of things most nurseries can point you at a good all-round product Safer Soap is a good one. These are all very general suggestions, obviously, but hopefully theyll get you back on track with your patnls. Good luck

I had a small red leaf Japanese maple growing in a large foundation planting on the south facing side of my house. There are some large oak trees that filter the sun at times but it is by no means in a shady spot. It was in this spot when we moved in 6 years ago and looked well established. Last summer/fall with the very dry conditions I made sure to water it deeply once a week. Now this spring 2011 it looks dead with only a few leaf out places at the bottom of the tree. I loved the look of this tree in this spot. What got it The drought of 2010 The cold winter Some other disease Can I safely replace with a tree like the Crimson Queen Any local availability in the Cinti/Dayton area that is recommemded Thanks for your help. Subject: Carpinus-scale and follage loss 2011-05-12 15:01:05
Comments:
Hi Steve,At Xavier, there are 7 Carpinus betulus Columnaris along the side of one of the dorms. They are in a very tight space to grow about 6 feet bed right next to wall but they have been there for about 9 years and doing very well. One of them on the outside edge had about half of its buds open late, shows signs of stress, cicada damage and is infested with calico scale and another scale that is dark brown. We are concerned that this may spread to the other Carpinus close by. I had heard about these sleeves you can put on the trees to stop the ants from climbing up the trunk that kill the beneficial insects that eat the scale. Will this be a good choice for now. They are also talking about using a horticultural oil treatment too or is this too late. Is there a summer oil What is your recommendation I would like to order the sleeves asap if they will help.Thanks- Karen

Comments:
I live near Dayton, OH and have a small front yard my home faces north. I would like to know what the expected habit of a magnolia northern belle would be here. It sounds like the tree is columnar reaching 15-25 tall and roughly 10 in diameter. Is this correct Can someone recommend a tree magnolia or other which would bloom late if it blooms and would grow to nicely fill such a space I think a 15-40 tall tree with a diameter of 15-30 and an oval or rounded habit would be great. I am open to suggestions. Most people in my neighborhood have Bradford Pear trees which look beautiful, but I like to be a little different. Thanks

Northern Belle is a cultivar of Sweetbay magnolia. It blooms in June but not like you more common Saucer magnolias that are blooming now. Is thin so it would be nice for close viewing but if you neede something full it may not work. That is the question you need to ask before making the decision. Also Amelanchier Cumulus will do well.Steve

I would like to plant something that will not creep over the outside edge of the bed which is a walk, but eventually fill the space back to the wall, no more than 2-3 height, that will take the shade, the dryness and look good. It could be a combination of different plants. There will be some rainwater that will reach probably up to half of the bed when we get the driving rains from the west. There is no irrigation. This is a commercial site. Your recommendations are needed. Thanks

Beds will be u shape around turf and then whatever may work at all under pines. Considering offset ornamental tree/shrubs/rain garden/sitting area in yard. This is a fabulous evergreen shade-tolerant, graceful, pestfree. It looks a little like Tsuga canadensis but without the bugs. I cant figure out why it isnt more available. I have several Ive grown from liners that are now 15ft tall. Some are cited on a rocky slope in poor soil and still have done well. Id like to get more. Does anyone know whos selling plants at least 4 high

Will these work for me Do you have other suggestions Ive also thought about the Thuja DeGroots Spire if I could get it to a single spire rather than multi-branched is that the right terminologyThese would be in full sun in zone 7, my soil is alkaline clay but I plan to put in raised berms with ammended soil. Responses to this comment.:
Judy,I think you are asking to much out of your planter. What I would suggest is to do a nice job with summer annuals then in the fall you can switch out your planters with evergreens like junipers, arborvitae, boxwood, or any other evergreen knowing it will be swithched out come May next year. You could plant yellow Dynamite pansies along with your evergreens in the winter. As for summer color you cant beat Sweet potato vines as the plant cascading over the planters. Petunia Vista Bubblegum Pink would also be a good choice. Check out the Zoos Best list and anything on the list would probably workSteve

Comments:
I used the ipomoea tricolor in several containers and hanging pots. When I emptied the soil from these pots I had HUGE tubers the size of large yams you buy in the grocery store no wonder the pots were so heavy. I know they probably arent edible because I used Bayer 3 in one rose care solution several times during the year in addition to Bayer insect and disease spray. However,I would like to know if I can save these tubers and plant them next year to grow the tricolor vine again and if this is possible what is the exact procedure Since the tubers are so big should I cut in pieces, if so what size and when should I do this Thank you.

Comments:
I live in Springfield, Missouri Zone 6 It is in the Southwest part of the state, about an hour north of Arkansas and an hour east of Kansas. I have an Acer griseum x nikoense in my front yard north side, although it gets very little summer shade. It does get autumn morning and evening shade. It is a relatively young tree about 15 feet tall with a trunk caliper of about 1 1/2 inches. I am not getting the red fall colors that I am supposed to. I usually get a brown like that of many oak species. I have had it two seasons now. This year I did get some color. But, not much. It started out somewhat yellow with a brown verigation. Yellow on the inside. Brown on the margins. As I inspected the leaflets closer, I could see tints of red in most of the leafs. I wanted to know what my problem is. I believe it comes from the soil being too alkaline. But, I saw several of the standard A.griseum at Utah State University a few years ago. Their soils up there reach into the pHs of the 8s. And, the fall color was a brilliant red. Do you have any ideas Thank you.

Advice to recipient above, simply wait. In Northwestern Illinois in 2002 I planted an Acer Igriseum/I that took well more than three or four years before it went from exactly what youre describing to a wonderful bright red and orange. One tip I can relay to all of you on the plant search at your local nurseriesWhen purchasing plants seedlings only should be considered - grafts will always come true to type ...they should be purchased during the peak of their fall colors, ...at the nursery. You might be looking for an Acer triflorum and come to see that most of the fall colored seedlings were yellow, but those few special ones had read and orange, tones.Good luck Missouri. 15 inches sounds a little closer -

Ive been noticing those as well. Theres one growing up against a food service building opposite the train station one by a viewing stand for one of the rhinos Indian, and one along the walking path at the elephant complex overlooking towards the duck pond. These are all taller specimens and as mentioned above, theres several new smaller ones planted between the elephant area and the boardwalk bordering the pond. I picked up several of its little brown seeds today 2-13-11, they are about an 1/8 and round, light brown, hard and lightly wrinkled. From what I read about its potential for being invasive, at least down south, they shouldnt be too hard to sprout. I also read thats only hardy to about a Z7, but these Cincy Zoo trees evidently have not been keeping current on those stats, so probably a tougher cultivar or just has inherent variability with some seedlings taking lower temps. But no, I havent seen them sold locally, just via websites.

Acer griseum is an excellent small tree in the NorthEast. It is not bothered by pests or disease. Leaves stay intact until they drop in late fall. It also is fairly drought tolerant. I have used it in civic plantings as well as private gardens. The cinnamon-colored exfoliating bark looks spectacular in a snowy landscape.

I plan to put three Yellowwoods in a line about 18 feet apart in full sun all day. My house was built in 1993 and the soil where I will plant the trees is heavy clay and compacted. I plan to plant the trees by digging a hole three times the diameter of the root ball, a little less deep than the root ball and filling in with shredded topsoil. I have read that Yellowwoods have a taproot. Does this location and planting method seem like it will be successful with Yellowwoods
Source: CVG PlantPlaces
Respond to this comment
Responses to this comment.:
Likely no. Yellowwoods dont do particularly well in heavy soils, espetially in full sun. I might suggest a Zelkova variety or Honeylocust, as they will be more tolerant of harsh conditions. A note about taproots I dont know for sure if yellowwoods have a trong taproot or not, but any tree transplanted balled and burlapped wil have had all roots severed and wont form another strong taproot. Containerized tress should have all circling roots removed before planting, and this usualy removes the taproot as well.

My neighbor just planted a large white plasic fence. I am looking for a pyramidal arborvitae like the kind I see down south in Georgia. What this to grow to maybe 30 feet. What are the best complimentary plants that I could plant along the fence line that would attract birds ete. and would give some year round green colorThanks

I have had success germinating macrophylla with the following steps as prescribed by William Cullina in his book 1 I collect the seeds as they turn bright red and pop out of the seed pod, 2 soak the seeds for 1-2 days in water, then rub off the red seed coat, 3 scarify lightly one side of the brown seed with fine sand paper, 4 sow immediately outdoors in a flat and cover with screen to keep rodents out, 5 80-90 of the seeds germinate in April-May that spring.

We have tried to plant hollies under our oak tree with NO success. I think it is just too dry for them to survive. We have a Japanes Kerria and Oakleaf hydrangea under the oak tree and they have survived for 20 years but we need to water the hydrangea on a regular basis, the Kerria seems more drought tolerant and is beautiful in the spring with its yellow blooms. Honestly we have not had much luck growing any holly in our yard, we do have shade and clay soil which is acidic so not sure why they dont thrive.

I have a japenese maple that was planted 2 years ago. At the time it was planted there was a 60 foot evergreen behind it, thus giving it some shade, now that evergreen has been cut down. Will this tree do OK in full sun It is in my back bed and that faces southwest.

Recently, street improvements took two shade trees from our front yard on a busy, urban street. We want to replant trees that will provide shade, be fast growing, and very tolerant of traffic. The area between our house and the sidewalk is just 15 - 20 feet wide. The earliest, reasonable opportunity for us to plant will be fall, 2008. The area receives full sun in the afternoon.I heard that the new American elm might be a good choice. We are open to suggestions. Thanks very much.

I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM. IN THE SUMMER THE SUN BEATS DOWN ON OUR LIVINGROOM WINDOW. IT STARTS AROUND FIVE THIRTY IN THE EVENING WHEN THE SUN IS FULL FORCE IN OUR FRONT YARD AND IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT WE HAVE ON THE WINDOW, OR HOW FAST OUR FAN IS GOING AND HOW LOW THE AIR GOES. ITS AN ENERGY SAPPER AND I HATE THAT THE MOST. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE FAST GROWING SHADE TREES THAT I CAN PUT IN MY FRONT YARD. I DONT REALLY LIKE THE LOOKS OF RIVER BIRCH TREES AS THOSE ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT FIT MY CRITERIA SO FAR. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A FAST GROWING SHADE TREE THAT WOULD RECIEVE LATE AFTERNOON SUN, FROM ABOUT 230 ON. THANKS TONI

Our house was built a few years ago the back yard was cut out of a hillside. The hillside is very rocky with hard clay soil which can be seen from the interior of the house - such an eye-sore. Enkianthus campanulatus is what is normally sold in this area. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has Enkianthus perulatus which we think is superior however they are not grown in the nursery industry. This is why we added this to the Louisville site. The hope is to see this particular species propagated and sold in the region to test it out. Thanks for your comments.

Hi I have a gorgeous Cham. Noot. Pendula specimen that I planted in spring 02 as a 6 ft tall tree. It is now approx. 18 ft tall and doing well on the southeast exposure of our yard. Its pretty impressive and has that mysterious appearance. If youd like to view it and want me to send a photo, that can be done. Also have a 12 ft Japanese Maple Aconitifolium that is quite impressive, despite the last few challenging growing seasons. Your web site should be a great reqource for all of us avid local gardeners Thanks

I think the spelling is correct. It is an outstanding midsized shrub that we use quite often in the shade. Has nice spring flowers, attractive foliage and great fall color. We have purchased them from Klynn Nursery. I just finished reading the article in American Nurseryman, so I wanted to see what the site was all about. I think this is going to be a fantastic tool and I plan to use it very often. I would love to help in any way. Talk to you soon.

How is your lindera obtusiloba performing so far Ive attempted to grow it from seed on at least 4 different occasions but apparently the seed was never collected at the fresh stage . Ive had lindera angustifolia growing in my garden for the last 10 years or so and the Fall color is very nice . So because MY lindera angustifolia seed is very fresh , it does propagate from seed .

I have a Sweetheart American Chestnut in my yard that is 5 years old. It sometimes turns golden in the fall and it bears fruit every other year. I have a Dunstan in the back yard which is the same age and it too bears fruit. The Sweetheart is presumed to be a naturally occurring hybrid that was found in SE Ohio by a professor of Botany at Ashland College, OH. It may be a blight resistant native species actually.

My plant is at least 10 years old and in good health. My house location is in SE Kettering. Often this plant keeps its burgundy color until August. It often turns orange, red, and predominantly yellow in the fall. The bloom does seem to be a little more red than the native redbud I have planted 30 away from it. They are often in bloom at the same time. This plant seems to be brittle and branches can be broken easily. However, it has not suffered from storms, just careless mowing.

It is worth noting that Douglas fir deteriorates markedly with age, with a few noteable exceptions, so a beautiful, full, large tree is not, in my observation, typical.
